Basun Chinese Restaurant - Carlingford

Basun Chinese Restaurant

Carlingford Village. It's where all the classic asian restaurants are huddled together and today i'm out with my friends to find some dinner. While looking for a place to eat we stumble upon this, Basun Restaurant. We're not exactly sure how to pronounce it and we laugh at its name but we're all hungry and we decide to go in.

Ahhh... The typical smell of a classic Chinese restaurant hits us as soon as we step in. It smells lovely and further arouses out appetite. There's a buffet hot pot if you'd like but we opt for choosing our own dishes. Its quite spacious inside and we have the place to ourselves as its only 5pm.

Deep fried salt and pepper fish $16.80

This is the first dish to arrive and it smells delicious. There's a generous amount of fish and it is cooked just right. The fish is lightly battered and isn't too crispy or soft. It is well seasoned and the taste is superb but it is a bit salty if you have it without rice. Arguably the best dish out of what we had today.

Beef with Satay sauce $15.80

Mhmmmm.. Loads of beef swimming in large amounts of satay sauce, oil and onions. It is a bit messy and doesn't look too good but definitely makes up for it in flavour. The addition of bamboo and onions works well with the dish and adds a nice texture. Have this dish with rice as it will absorb the flavour from the sauce and taste great. Sadly this dish had a too much oil for me and was hard to finish at the end.

Soup with Vegetables $14.80

After all that protein, we decided to order something more clean and refreshing. We go for a dish by the name of soup with vegetables. I thought this soup would be bland but it was quite flavoursome, packing a nice punch from the pepper. The black fungus and bamboo again add a different but great texture to the dish. It is above a bed of bok choy which is unable to be seen in the picture. The ham/spam however does not fit in with the dish and we ended up leaving it and having the rest instead. It was still a great finish to the dinner and made me feel a lot less guilty about the rest of the meal.

We also ordered 2 large bowls of rice for only $4 but sadly, to the disappointment of one of my rice-loving friends, we couldn't finish it and left the restaurant with food on the table.

Overall, my experience of Basun Chinese Restaurant was very enjoyable, from its delicious food to my moments during dinner with my friends. They definitely filled our 4 stomachs with scrumptious dishes for a reasonable price. It is definitely worth revisiting, maybe to try its Korean hot pot, and I recommend you try it.
